Woman experiencing jaw pain — TMJ symptoms
Do these symptoms sound familiar? TMJ disorder affects an estimated 5–12% of adults. Many go years without the right diagnosis.

Signs You May Have TMJ Disorder

The jaw joint and surrounding muscles can cause a surprising range of symptoms — from clicking and pain to headaches and ear pressure.

  • Jaw Pain or Soreness

Aching or sharp pain in or around your jaw, especially in the morning or while eating.

  • Clicking or Popping

Sounds when you open or close your mouth — sometimes painful, sometimes not.

  • Headaches

Frequent tension headaches, especially in the temples or at the base of the skull.

  • Ear Pressure or Fullness

A feeling of stuffiness, ringing, or pressure not caused by an ear infection.

  • Jaw Locking

Difficulty fully opening or closing your mouth — the jaw feels "stuck."

  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Clenching or grinding at night, often linked to stress in the jaw joint.

  • Neck Pain

The jaw and cervical spine are closely connected. Pain in one often affects the other.

You're Not Alone

Why Your Jaw Pain Keeps Coming Back

Many people try multiple treatments before finding real relief. This isn't your fault — the underlying cause usually hasn't been addressed.

Night guards don't fix the cause. They may protect your teeth, but they rarely resolve why the joint is stressed in the first place.

Botox provides temporary relief. Injections can relax muscles short-term, but joint dysfunction usually remains.

Dental treatment focuses on the teeth. Many dentists treat the bite, but TMJ disorder often involves the joint and surrounding muscles.

Pain medication manages symptoms. It reduces pain temporarily but does nothing to restore normal jaw function.

Surgery carries real risks. Invasive procedures should be a last resort — most cases respond well to conservative care first.

Generic PT misses the jaw-neck connection. The jaw and cervical spine work together. Treating only one often leaves the root cause unaddressed.

There's a better path. A chiropractic approach to TMJ care looks at the whole picture — the joint, muscles, neck, and how you move. The goal is helping your body function better, not just masking the pain.

Cost shouldn't be a barrier to getting better. We work with many insurance plans and offer clear self-pay options.

🏥

Health Insurance Plans

Many insurance plans include Chiropractic care benefits for back and neck pain but unfortunately, many don't cover TMJ care. We'll try to help you understand what your plan covers, but with TMJ it's always best for you to check directly with your plan.

🚗

Auto Accident (PIP)

If your jaw or neck symptoms began after a car accident, your auto insurance Personal Injury Protection (PIP) may cover your care. We work with PIP claims.

💳

Self-Pay / "Cash Pay"

We offer transparent, straightforward self-pay pricing for patients without insurance coverage. No surprise bills — we discuss cost upfront.

Not sure what your plan covers?

Call us before your first visit and we'll help you understand your benefits. Chiropractic TMJ care is often significantly more affordable than dental appliances, Botox injections, or surgical procedures.

📞 Call to Verify Coverage

Coverage varies by plan and individual circumstances. We encourage patients to verify benefits directly with their insurance provider. Oregon TMJ does not guarantee specific reimbursement amounts.

After 25 years at Back In Shape Chiropractic and treating many patients successfully suffering with TMJ pain and dysfunction, I recently added the Oregon TMJ name to my practice. I kept on seeing patients who had been struggling with jaw pain for years — bouncing between dentists, specialists, and temporary fixes — without finding lasting relief.

Chiropractic care offers something different. By looking at how the jaw, neck, and surrounding muscles work together, we can often identify and address what's actually driving the problem — not just the symptoms.

I take a calm, thorough approach with every patient. Before we do anything, you'll understand what's going on and have a clear plan. Your questions are always welcome.

TMJ pain is personal to me. As a teenager, I had a large overbite that was not able to be corrected with orthodontics and at the direction of my parents, I had corrective surgery to my jaw for both cosmetic reasons and to supposedly prevent TMJ issues. Let's just say it did not prevent but likely caused me to have TMJ issues and I would not wish that on anyone.

Thankfully, my own issues were not as bad as many of the patients that I treat, but that led me to develop at least some appreciation for what some TMJD sufferers have to go through. I call myself a TMJ enthusiast because I get excited about helping people with TMJD and learning everything I can.

My practice is located in Milwaukie, and I see patients from across the greater Portland area. I'm happily married for almost 25 years with 2 children and our adorable labradoodle. Tennis, working out, outdoor adventures, keeping up my home and office and volunteering keep me busy when I'm not at work.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often.

TMJ disorder (TMJD or TMD) refers to problems with the temporomandibular joint — the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull. It can involve the joint itself, surrounding muscles, or both. Symptoms range from mild to quite disruptive. While rarely dangerous, it can significantly affect quality of life. Most cases respond well to conservative, non-surgical treatment.

Yes. Chiropractors trained in TMJ treatment can address dysfunction in the jaw joint, neck, and surrounding muscles — all of which frequently contribute to TMJ disorder. Research supports manual therapy and exercise for reducing jaw pain and improving function. Our approach is conservative, hands-on, and focused on how your jaw and neck work together.

Dentists typically focus on teeth and bite — valuable if TMJ disorder is bite-related. However, many cases involve joint mechanics, muscles, or the cervical spine. Our chiropractic approach addresses these elements directly, which is why patients often see improvement after dental treatments haven't provided lasting relief. In some cases, a combined approach may be most effective.

Our approach is gentle and conservative. We work within your comfort level at all times. Some mild soreness after the first few appointments is normal — similar to how muscles feel after activity — but treatment itself should not be painful. We'll check in with you and adjust based on how you're responding.

This depends on the severity of your condition and how your body responds. We build a personalized plan after your initial evaluation and review it clearly before starting. Some patients feel significant improvement within a few visits; others with more complex conditions may need a longer course of care. We track progress and adjust as we go.

We work with many health insurance plans and PIP (auto accident) coverage. Coverage varies by plan and TMJD may not always be a covered condition. Please contact us before your first appointment and we'll help you understand your options. We also offer transparent self-pay pricing for those without insurance coverage or whose plan excludes TMJ care.

Yes. Whiplash and other cervical injuries from car accidents can contribute to or trigger TMJ disorder — the jaw and neck are closely connected. If your jaw pain started after a collision, it's worth having both evaluated. We have experience working with patients whose symptoms began following motor vehicle accidents, and your PIP coverage may apply.

Our clinic is located in Milwaukie, Oregon, and we see patients from across the greater Portland area — including Portland, Clackamas, West Linn, Happy Valley, Oregon City, and Lake Oswego. Our office is easy to access from Highway 224 and I-205.
